Funny things kids say!

Some of the things Poppy says are so random and funny they make us laugh out loud.  Yesterday for instance, she was sitting at the table eating her sandwich when she turned around to me and said "mommy and daddy haven`t got a doorbell"! No idea why, nobody had mentioned doorbells, it did not relate to her sandwich in any way and she had previously been watching My little pony on television, no door bells included in the programme!
When she decided to play with the clock which stands next to the television I asked her a few times to leave it alone, but when she didn`t I decided to put it on the windowsill out of her reach so she didn`t break it. "Grandma, I want to borrow the clock." This line, delivered with a cheeky grin on her face made me have to hide my smile as I was trying to tell her not to do something and it would have given out a mixed message! She certainly knows how to get round you!
When playing with her dolls house she lined the little people up who live in it on the ground, but when I asked if they were all going to sleep she replied "no, they are looking at the stars"!
Where she gets some of the things she says I have no idea, I sometimes wonder if she has been here before she is so knowing and her vocabulary is so varied for a child not quite 2 and a half years old.
We took Poppy yesterday afternoon to visit Margaret and Richard, my sister and brother in law. As we were backing off the drive in the car Poppy announced that she was going to visit Daniel.  "Who is Daniel?" I asked, "is that your friend from nursery Poppy?"  She replied "no its my cousin."  Her Mum says everyone is her cousin at the moment, though she has no idea who Daniel is either! Grandad is going to look at the notice board at nursery this morning to see if there is a Daniel at nursery as we have no idea where she might know him from otherwise!
On the journey to Margs house Poppy said she could see a rainbow and that it was pretty, then she said she saw the snowman and the snow dog. When we stopped at the traffic lights she was saying "go go go" and when we arrived she decided she just had to walk in the untouched snow piled up alongside the driveway, falling over in the process! So ofcourse we had to jump her up and down to knock the snow off her wellington boots and take off her gloves to put on the radiator! She was a little shy at first, started to chatter, then when Richard arrived home from work became a bit shy again for a few minutes before forgetting her initial shyness and chattering as normal, causing Richard to ask if she ever stops talking! As it was twenty to five we decided to pop into the fish and chip shop on the way home for tea (we are both on a diet but Poppy likes her tea on time so it was the easiest option) She sat at the table under duress, eating some chips and fish inbetween cries of "I want to come out" and me saying "We are having our tea Poppy, we sit at the table for meals so eat your tea please" every five minutes! (She no longer uses the highchair but has a booster seat on an ordinary dining chair) She did eat some food eventually though sometimes it can be a bit of a battle! She would much rather be playing than eating, she prefers to graze throughout the day than eat a large meal, obviously much too busy to take time out to eat!
Update - Grandad just texted to say Daniel is a little boy at nursery! Mystery solved!

No Grandma, its boring!

When Emma and Poppy arrived yesterday the dogs wanted a treat. Emma was getting some chew sticks from the cupboard so I said to Poppy "tell the doggies to sit down for their biscuit Poppy" whereupon she immediately sat down on the floor beside them ready for her biscuit and would not get up!
She sat at the table for her toast and fruit and watched Noddy and Peppa Pig for a while but did not want to sit for long, Poppy had too much playing to do to sit still! We had a few tunes on the keyboard which we had to dance to, I tried to sit down but she kept pulling me up with cries of "Grandma, get up, dance, over there!" Bossy little madam!
The fuzzy felt came out, not that she wanted to make a picture particularly, she made a game up where the giraffes made of different coloured felt had to climb the mountain (my armchair) and kept falling off resulting in visits to the hospital with poorly legs, a sore neck and the strangest one, my ear has fallen off! Her giraffe, Reddy, yes you guessed it the giraffe was red, kept going up to the other giraffes which she had given to me,(Pinky and Browny)asking "are you okay guys, have you hurt yourself?"
After playing for a while Poppy went to find her dummy and snuggly telling me she was tired, wanted to watch My Pony and lay herself down on the sofa, head on cushion, and asked for the blanky. I only have 2 episodes of My Little Pony on my Sky planner and we have seen each one so many times I could almost tell you what comes next and what they will say. I put the programme on for her and to my surprise, as she does not normally go to sleep quite so early, she was fast asleep by 9.30am! We were only half way through the second My Little Pony so she must have been tired!
Jill turned up, as she does each time I have Poppy, to help me, but as she was already asleep we took our cups of tea into the other room so as not to disturb our sleeping beauty while we chatted.
Lunch was bread and butter with banana which she likes, she then decided to bring me the entire contents of my fruit bowl, saying she was going to the shops, and then had an apple. I was forced to eat two plums "here you are Grandma, eat it" but refused the third on the basis that it was as hard as a rock and sneaked it back into the bowl!
Grandad arrived and was immediately pressed into service doing jigsaw puzzles, playing with the dolls house, cooking with her kitchen and looking at books. I asked her if she wanted a story from the Peppa Pig book she was looking at, she loves Peppa and loves the stories, but she was obviously not in the mood for a story "no Grandma its boring!" I tried to persuade Grandad to make Poppy a snowman as she had asked if we had a snowman in our garden earlier in the day and then said "Grandad will make one"! Funnily enough he did not fancy going out into the cold though! His excuse was "the snow is frozen."
I don`t do snow myself so I couldn`t say a lot!

Snowy play

Just been speaking to Emma and she said Poppy has had a lovely time playing in the snow.  They bought a sledge for her yesterday so today they have been over the fields, met her Uncle Gaz and cousin Ruby, and they have all had a great time sledging down the slopes. Ruby screaming and Poppy laughing her head off! Luckily Poppy was wearing her snowsuit we bought her and Emma said it has kept her toasty warm though Emma has been frozen and said her hands were hurting when they got home, having had to play snowballs with Poppy all the way back as she did not want to be pulled home in the sledge, she wanted to throw snowballs at Mommy! As soon as they got home their was no sign of Lee, he was in the garden building a snowman! Big kid! Photos of said snowman have appeared on Facebook wearing a familiar hat - one that Graham leant to Emma for New Years Eve when she did not know if she had to dress up for the I`m a celebrity party in Australian bush garb. (Its a sun hat he bought to wear to protect his neck and forehead on holiday a few years back) He put a comment on Facebook to the effect that he recognised the hat, and apparently it is an Australian snowman called Bruce so he needs the appropriate head gear!

One worn out Grandma!

Hyper Poppy has been to visit us today, as a result I am absolutely worn out. I think we have had all the toys out at one time or another, several times. She walked through the door this morning at 7.45am and asked for the blackboard and chalks, played with them for 15 minutes or so then wanted the car mat, played with that for a while then wanted the toy basket pulled out from underneath the table which she then proceeded to empty, playing with each toy for ten minutes or so before going on to the next one! By 11am she was very tired, though fighting going to sleep, she had already lay down on the sofa four or five times, watched tv for a bit then got up again, played with something, lay down, you get the picture. Jill and Hannah came round to visit me and Jill persuaded Poppy to go upstairs for her sleep, where she settles better. She said yes she wanted to go up but would not go with Jill alone, I had to follow them up to see her into bed and by the time I had been to the bathroom she was fast asleep. I then tidied the toys up. Again. This time with the help of Jill and Poppy slept for a little over an hour. She was just as hyper when she got up again, once again all the toys were out though she did manage to fit in eating her sandwiches and some cake. Grandad arrived home from work and I was very pleased to have the opportunity to sit down leaving Poppy to play with Grandad for a while. Emma arrived just after 6 oclock to pick her up by which time I think both of us were worn out! When Grandad asked her to help pick up the toys, like she is asked to do at nursery she said "you do it Grandad" and I had to leave the room, after all I could not laugh in front of her could I? When she decided to `paint` the coffee table with a straw which was in her cup of juice and I asked Grandad to bring a cloth to wipe the table, she turned round and said "are you going to tell my off Grandad? Are you going to tell my off?" Not that she was bothered, she was grinning as she said it! Little devil!!
On the other hand she has been very good using the potty and has actually asked to use it 3 times during the course of the day, she usually stands wobbling around or plaiting her legs trying not to admit she needs it, so that is certainly progress! It will eventually become routine to ask to use the potty and in the meantime patience is the key.
I think maybe Poppy will have an early night tonight, she was very tired when she left us, and she was awake at 5am so her Mummy told me, which probably accounts for her hyper behavior today as she tends to be that way when she is tired. She`s not the only one whose tired now! I think an early night may be on the cards for this worn out Grandma too!

Oh poo.

Poppy has been really good the last few days and is now out of nappies in the day time, you can tell when she wants to "go" and can point her in the direction of the potty. She does not always like to tell you, or ask to use it, but as she gets used to it that will come.
She has been suffering from a cold this past few days, again, and it is always wise to keep a tissue on hand for when she needs one. Em took her to the doctors who gave her some antibiotics and upped her inhalers so hopefully that will do the trick and indeed already seems to be doing so as her appetite was returning a bit yesterday.
She makes us laugh all the time, she told her Daddy he looked funny the other day because of the jumper he put on when he arrived home from work. Mind you it was a Rudolph the rednose reindeer jumper that he had at Christmas but he had been working out in the cold all morning and was frozen, he said it was very warm which is why he decided to wear it in January! She asked to look at my nail varnish yesterday, she loves it when we paint our nails, and she particularly liked the red varnish I had used, telling me my nails look smart! She wanted to know what colour I had on my toe nails and tried to pull off my slippers until I told her I don`t paint my toe nails, then she wanted to go upstairs and fetch my varnish so she could paint my toe nails for me! I managed to distract her from that one, I can just imagine what my toes would look like if I let a 2 and a half year old loose with a bottle of nail varnish! I can imagine what the floor, sofa, dogs and infact everything else around would look like too!
Poppy was playing with the dolls house yesterday and she has a little family who live in it. She put the baby to bed and decided to get the little lady to read it a story which went something like this "Once upon a time three bears lived in a house in the spooky woods. They went for a walk to wait for some porridge and then the big bad wolf came." Goldilocks mixed up with Red Riding hood was quite inventive!
Poppy never stopped talking yesterday, apart from the hour and a half she was asleep, and I think every toy we have in the house was taken out and played with at some point during the day. She wanted the blackboard and easel out then kept making me draw the sun which she immediately rubbed off with the blackboard rubber amid gales of laughter, especially when she got tickled for being cheeky! She had a tiny accident in the morning involving a poo which she tried her best to get to the potty for, but which she did not quite make in time. She sat on the potty but did nothing, though unbeknown to me the poo she had done must have slipped through her pants down the leg of her trousers so that when she had her trousers pulled up she immediately started dancing around saying "I got a poo in my trousers, I got a poo in my trousers!" Sure enough when I took her trousers off it dropped on the floor and I was forced to pick it up with paper! She then had to have clean trousers and underwear on after being washed thoroughly. I was relating this story to Emma and Poppy immediately wanted Mommy to draw a poo on the blackboard which she then kept saying "poo" and holding her nose then rubbing the drawing off and laughing her head off. Having Poppy to visit is often funnier than a comedy show on tv! Bless you Poppy, you make the sun shine even when the day is grey. x

PLOPPING,

Potty training is going rather well, Poppy seems to be getting the hang of it so hopefully, apart from at night, nappies could soon be a thing of the past. She has started to ask when she needs to use the potty and Em tells me that this morning she suddenly realised she needed a poo, rushed to the bathroom shouting "quick Mommy, get my nappy off, I need a poo"!! (This was before she was dressed so was still wearing her bedtime nappy)  She even sat on the toilet with her toddler seat on it, something she has not been keen on before, and was very pleased when she finished successfully! Em said her face was a picture and Poppy told her she was "plopping"!

Em and I went to visit Michelle and the boys yesterday, taking the potty with us. She tried Poppy on her potty a couple of times, an action which had the boys in fits of laughter and cries of "no, no, not by me" but she did not manage a wee. We half expected it to happen on the car seat on the way home but it didn`t and she managed to hold on until Emma had dropped me off, had a cup of tea and Poppy a drink of juice and some rainbow drops, then went home to see her Daddy.  She certainly has much better bladder control than me! She can wait for hours before the need arises! Lee noticed her wriggling and asked her if she needed to use the potty and she said yes, so looks like she is winning. We all have to high five her each time she succeeds, and she told me on the phone she had weed in the potty, sounding very proud. Takes time, and patience and ofcourse the child has to learn to recognise the feeling of needing to go, and to recognise it in time to get there! Bless her, high five Poppy! x
